Great Fate, pray Thee:
I wish to see
the WIND,
and be
the RAIN,
and know
the COSMIC GLOW.
Throughout my seven decades as an educator, I have always wished to enable my students to 1) see the unseen and 2) know the unknown, in order that they thus might become able to 3) rain their attained knowledge upon those whom they would in turn teach–and discover some as-yet unknown extraterrestrial and un-divined metaphysical shinings among the myriad mysterious and untold sleeping suns throughout our universe. Hopefully, some of my former students–and perhaps some of you who read this poem–may now also bring us all prayerfully together to look after each other and help each other heal during this challengingly divisive era in our country.
Former NCAA and NAAU All-America sprinter and former DPS superintendent John Telford was named a Sharon (Connecticut) Creative Arts Foundation Prize Poet in 1966 when he taught English and coached city and state track champions at Pershing High School.
